Promoting Socioeconomic Equity in Choral Practice and Performance

Date Range

Session Type
Session

What does socioeconomic equity look like in choral spaces and how do we encourage economic inclusivity in our choirs? This panel discussion dives deep into the complexities of socioeconomic barriers to choral participation for both singers and audiences and how to structure your choir to better encourage participation across a spectrum of social and economic standings. Panelists will discuss hidden economic barriers to member and audience participation, such as dues, ticket costs, childcare, transportation, concert attire, etc., and how these barriers are expressed in rural vs. urban areas. Drawing on the experiences of The Tallahassee Community Chorus, the North Fork Community Choir, and others, this timely panel will end with a discussion of various options for creating equitable solutions to these barriers and an open brainstorming/Q&A session with attendees on how they can create socioeconomic equity in their own choirs.
