Performing Renaissance Polyphony: Developing Independence, Style, and Musicianship

Location
Dorothy Chandler Pavillion - Rehearsal Room 2
Session Type
Special Event/Performance
Session Subtype
Breakout Session

Performing Renaissance polyphony builds a singer’s musicianship, self-confidence, and independence, and fosters a deep sensitivity to the expressive values inherent in Renaissance music. Many choir directors, however, shy away from performing early music because they feel they aren’t able to perform it “right” – perhaps because of the singer make-up of their ensemble or the size of their chorus. Assisted by singers from LA’s Angeles Chorale (John Sutton, director), Jameson Marvin will explore how we can achieve expression and style in the performance of Renaissance polyphonic music through rehearsal techniques in this two-hour workshop-style session.
