Kitty Brazelton receives 12th annual Ossietzky Prize for Psalm 104 setting

New York City composer Kitty Brazelton was awarded the 12th annual Carl von Ossietzky Composition Prize by the University of Oldenburg for her setting of Psalm 104 for mixed SATB & treble choir, percussion and organ.
 
Brazelton describes how the composition came about:
"Shortly after Hurricane Sandy's damage to my New York City neighborhood  last fall, I translated Psalm 104 and set it to music, fascinated by its millennia-ancient, possibly even Egyptian, prayer for human safety from the fury of nature. The violent beauty of our precarious existence on this earth connects us to our cousins in the 14th c. BCE, across time, culture, war, everything."
 
Brazelton is incredibly honored and would like to thank the distinguished jury—Violeta Dinescu, Siegrid Ernst, Christoph Keller, Michael Searby and Johannes von Hoff—who conferred this award February 10, 2013, in St. Ansgari Kirche, Oldenburg, Germany.
