Next week, Kantorei joins forces with Guatemala City’s Vocalis Camerata to present Voces del Sur, a vibrant celebration of Latin American choral music, performed May 16 and 17, 2026, in Denver.
The program spans centuries of musical tradition—from colonial-era works to contemporary compositions—highlighting the rich fusion of Indigenous, European, and African influences that define Latin American choral heritage. More than a concert, Voces del Sur offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience this repertoire performed collaboratively by artists whose cultural roots are deeply connected to the music itself.
While the performances promise musical excellence, the deeper story lies in the enduring partnership between Kantorei and Vocalis—a relationship built over years of artistic exchange, shared travel, and mutual learning. What began as an international connection has evolved into a sustained collaboration grounded in trust, respect, and a shared commitment to elevating choral music as a force for human connection.
“This is not a one-time collaboration,” says Artistic Director, Joel Rinsema. “It’s a relationship that has grown over time, shaped by listening, learning, and creating together across borders. Voces del Sur reflects that journey.”
The partnership has included reciprocal visits between Colorado and Guatemala, joint performances, and ongoing cultural exchange. Through this work, both ensembles have deepened their artistic practices while engaging more intentionally with the communities they serve.
For Colorado audiences, the project carries particular local significance. Latin American communities—especially Guatemalan families—are an essential part of the state’s cultural fabric. By centering Latin American choral traditions on a prominent stage, Voces del Sur affirms representation while inviting broader audiences into a richer, more nuanced understanding of the region’s musical legacy.
At a time when global connection can feel increasingly complex, this collaboration demonstrates how the arts can function as a form of cultural diplomacy. Through shared music-making, Kantorei and Vocalis create space for dialogue, empathy, and collective experience—reminding audiences of what it means to listen across cultures.
