Cantare Con Vivo, winner Chorus America’s 2014 Education and Community Engagement Award, is pleased to introduce our new 2015 Children’s Music Education and Outreach directors who will be fulfilling the responsibilities that Julie Haydon so amply accomplished these past 12 years.
Emily Ryan is our Cantare Music Education Director, and will be overseeing and managing our in-school children’s music education program. Emily will provide support and administrative oversight to the eight teaching artists Cantare employs who weekly serve over 2,650 students in 67 elementary classrooms spread across ten Title 1 Oakland public schools.
Emily attended Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, with a concentration in Flute Performance. Shortly after graduating from SOTA, she began singing with a variety of professional and college choirs in the Bay Area, including Schola Cantorum, the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and the UC Berkeley and SF State Chamber Choirs. With the Symphony Chorus, she was part of a Grammy-winning recording of Mahler’s 8th Symphony, and with the SF State and UC Berkeley choirs she toured France and Eastern Europe. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Music from SF State, Emily returned to the SF Girls Chorus, with whom she sang for 12 years, as the Level III Director of the Chorus School, igniting for the first time her love for teaching music. She subsequently went on to receive her Masters in Music Education, with an emphasis in the Kodály approach, at Holy Names University. Her experience in music education and choral performance is exemplary, and she is very familiar with Cantare having worked with us as a teaching artist these past five years.
Daniel Strychacz will serve as our Director of Cantare Children’s Choirs, focusing on the more than 250 young singers and four teaching artists who participate in our seven elementary after-school choirs, along with conducting our youth choir Nova.
Daniel started singing with the VOENA Children's Choir in the Bay Area when he was 10 years old. Daniel pursued music in college, earning his BA in Music from Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he served as the Occidental Glee Club's General Manager, tenor Section Leader, and Student Conductor. In 2009, Daniel won the Peters Memorial Prize for the student who most “...advanced the ideals and prestige of music on campus.” Daniel served as Cantare’s intern in the 2012-13 season before heading to USC where he recently earned his Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting under the guidance of Jo-Michael Scheibe, Christian Grases and Don Brinegar. He brings valuable experience and vision into the mix that will further advance our efforts in serving this inner city community of young people.
