John Shibley has more than 25 years of experience leading complex organizational improvement efforts in a variety of industries and settings. After four years as EmcArts Director of Organizational Learning, John returned to private practice in 2010.
John now works as a lead facilitator for EmcArts' innovation programs, including the Innovation Lab for the Performing Arts, which he helped develop, and the Innovation Lab for Museums. John’s Innovation Lab participants have included the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, The Civilians, the Wooster Group , The Apollo Theatre and the Nelson Atkins Museum. John also leads EmcArts' effort to integrate systems thinking into community planning for adaptive change in the arts.
Other engagements, from John's tenure at EmcArts and from over a decade of prior private practice, include The James Irvine Foundation, The Boston Symphony Orchestra, L. L. Bean, General Electric, AT&T, Harley Davidson, the Vancouver Island Health Authority, Brown University, and the New York City and LAUSD school systems. He has also worked the Mellon Foundation Orchestra Forum, where he served as a Fellow. He has taught at the MIT Senior Executive Program and at the Shambala Leadership Institute, was an original founder of the Society for Organizational Learning and has published articles on systems dynamics and strategy.
John received a Masters Degree in Consulting Psychology from Harvard's Graduate School of Education. When not working with organizations and artists, he plays jazz guitar and studies spiritual direction.
