Terry Knowles

Terry Knowles resumed her consulting career in August 2015 when she became Senior Counsel for Phillips & Associates, a firm which during its 45 years has served over 500 non-profit organizations throughout the Western U.S., as well as selected national assignments. Knowles works with non-profits to reach their goals through effective resource development, strategic planning, and good governance. She was previously affiliated with Phillips & Associates from 1996-99, when she provided fundraising and management counsel to non-profit educational, cultural, and social service organizations. Clients served have included the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ Seminary and College, Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, American Jazz Philharmonic, Pasadena Symphony, Ojai Music Festival, Idyllwild Arts Foundation, and Weingart Center Association.

For 15 years, from 2000-2015, Knowles was President & CEO of the Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC), a non-profit performing arts institution which is a founding resident company of The Music Center of Los Angeles County. During Knowles’ tenure, LAMC recorded five commercial CDs, more than doubled its operating budget to $5.4 million, expanded its concert season and institutional profile significantly, implemented multi-year strategic plans, undertook ambitious commissioning projects, toured to Europe, New York, and the Midwest, and expanded its relationship with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and other leading Southland music organizations. In June 2015, Knowles received Chorus America’s Distinguished Service Award, given periodically to a member whose long-time service to the field is judged to have significantly furthered Chorus America’s mission. Prior to her leadership of LAMC, Knowles served as Executive Director of Development at KUSC Radio, Manager of Corporate and Foundation Giving for Los Angeles Opera, and Director of Individual Giving at the Minneapolis United Way.
