Magen Solomon

Active across the US and abroad as a clinician, teacher, and guest conductor, Magen Solomon has been Artistic Director of the San Francisco Choral Artists since 1995. Together they have premiered over 260 choral works, performed at ACDA and Chorus America conferences, twice received the Chorus America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, and released three CDs. The ensemble has collaborated with nationally-known instrumental ensembles including The Whole Noyse, The Alexander String Quartet, Veretski Pass, The Galax Quartet, and others. Since the fall of 2014, Magen has served as Artistic Director of the 70-voice San Francisco Bach Choir, an ensemble performing works of all periods and specializing in Baroque and Classical works with professional period-instrument ensembles.

Dr. Solomon is also on the faculty of the University of California-Berkeley where she directs the Chamber Chorus. She has served as Artistic Director of the Stockton Chorale, and for twelve years was Music Director of the Oakland Symphony Chorus. From 2004–2010, she taught in the Choral and Sacred Music department at the University of Southern California. Magen has also taught and conducted at Santa Clara University, UC-Santa Cruz, Smith and Mount Holyoke colleges, and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Solomon has been guest conductor the California Bach Society, Pro Coro Canada, and others ensembles and has collaborated on performances of major choral works with Michael Tilson Thomas, Nicolas McGegan, Helmuth Rilling, Kent Nagano, and Christoph von Dohnányi, among others. She is editor of the “New Voices In Research” column in the Choral Journal, Chair of the ACDA Herford Dissertation Prize Committee, and has published an edition of Johannes Eccard's "Newe deutzsche Lieder” (1578) with A-R Editions. She holds M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in Conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studied under Robert Fountain, and a B.A. in Music from Oberlin College.
