Jameson Marvin

Jameson Marvin was Director of Choral Activities, Senior Lecturer on Music at Harvard University for 32 years. Under his direction the choral program at Harvard grew to include six choirs and to achieve national prominence. He conducted the Harvard Glee Club, Radcliffe Choral Society, and the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum, and under his conductorship these ensembles appeared at nine Divisional Conferences and seven National Conferences of the American Choral Directors Association. His ensembles were considered to be among the premier collegiate choruses in America. 

Dr. Marvin’s choral artistry is mirrored by his knowledge of style and performance practices of historical eras, and his insightful, communicative, and inspiring performances. Some 80 choral-orchestral masterworks from the 17th through the 21st centuries, and his unique knowledge of a cappella gems from the early 15th century through newly commissioned works of the 21st century—for men’s, women’s, and mixed choruses—reveal the full range of his comprehensive musicianship.

In 2010, Dr. Marvin formed the Jameson Singers, a community choir in which many of his former students sing. The Jameson Singers were honored to perform at Chorus America’s National Conference in Boston, June 2015.

Raised in Glendale, California, Jameson Marvin received his B.A. degree in Music Theory, History, and Composition from the University of California Santa Barbara, the M.A. in Choral Conducting and Early Music Performance from Stanford University, and the D.M.A. in Choral Music from the University of Illinois. Since retirement Dr. Marvin has enjoyed choral residencies at USC, Michigan, Yale, Boston, Oregon, and Stanford.
