Boston City Singers was founded in 1995 in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester. Over the last 20 years, programming has grown to include 500 members in 20 divisions in inner city neighborhoods. Their mission is to provide the highest level of musical training and wide-ranging performance opportunities for young people to inspire personal development, celebrate diversity, and foster goodwill. Members come from all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds and many countries, including Haiti, Jamaica, Venezuela, Korea, the Dominican Republic and Brazil. Over 80% require scholarship assistance to participate.
The 45-voice Tour Choir (ages 11 – 18) has appeared on concert, opera, and theatre stages and at many of Boston’s significant events. They have toured the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Argentina and have accepted invitations to perform at Festival 500 in St Johns, Newfoundland, at the International Choral Festival in Monte Caseros, Argentina, at Carnegie Hall, and the Coralua Festival in Trondheim in 2015. They will conclude the current season with two full performances at the American Guild of Organists National Conference.
Tour Choir members have worked with many international conductors including David Squire and Dr. Karen Grylls, Elise Bradley, Peter Roux and Gobingca George Mxadana, and American clinicians Ysaye Barnwell, Rollo Dilworth, Mollie Stone, Susan Robbins, and Henry Leck. Repertoire includes classical, world, folk music, gospel, and contemporary music. All members receive vocal coaching, percussion, and dance instruction enabling authentic performances of many genres of music.
