David Simmons

David Simmons has been the artistic director and conductor of the Congressional Chorus in Washington DC since 2006. In 2008, he also became the founding artistic director and conductor of the American Youth Chorus. David has served as a music director, conductor, and accompanist for numerous opera and musical theatre companies in the DC metro area, including the Washington National Opera and the Washington Savoyards and has conducted choruses at The White House, The U.S. Capitol Building, The U.S. Department of State, The Library of Congress, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Harman Center for the Arts, and the Atlas Performing Arts Center. In addition, he has worked in the education and community outreach programs of numerous choral organizations, including The Choral Arts Society of Washington and The Washington Sängerbund. Prior to his full-time work with the Congressional Chorus, David worked as an elementary and middle school music teacher and choral director for 18 years.

An accomplished pianist and organist, David has been playing professionally since the age of 14. Since moving to the Washington DC area in 1988, he has also worked as a church organist and choir director in several DC metro churches. David holds degrees from Muhlenberg College and the American University College of Law. He worked on Capitol Hill for the late Senator John Heinz and has also practiced law in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
