Mary Ann de Barbieri is a proven manager with strong leadership, organizational development and fundraising skills. Mary Ann was associated with The Shakespeare Theatre for sixteen years, serving as managing director for ten years. Prior to opening de Barbieri & Associates (dBA) in 1994, she was director of the Washington, D.C. office of The Foundation Center.
As a consultant, Mary Ann has extensive experience with projects to enhance the sustainability of nonprofit organizations. She has managed the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities UPSTART Capacity Building program since it began in 2006. Her work with the program has included coaching and consulting for 22 DC-based arts organizations. Serving as a senior consultant with National Arts Strategies for six years, Mary Ann was lead consultant for the Cleveland Foundation’s Building Arts Strength in Cleveland (BASICs) capacity building program, project director for the Arizona ArtShare Midsize Stabilization Program, and senior consultant for the New Haven Arts Stabilization Program and the Arts Stabilization project in Baltimore.
Mary Ann is past-president of the board of directors of the Center for Nonprofit Advancement (CNA) and was chair of the selection committee of CNA’s Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management. She has chaired the Washington Post Grants in the Arts selection committee since the grant program was established in 1997. A frequent speaker and trainer, Mary Ann designed the curriculum for Chorus America’s Chorus Management Institute (CMI) and has served as core faculty for the Chorus America program since its inception in 2002.
