The Houston Chamber Choir is a highly regarded, professional ensemble of 24 musicians selected by competitive audition. Founded in 1995 by Robert Simpson, the Houston Chamber Choir presents an annual, on-stage concert season of 12 live performances, undertakes tours and recordings, sponsors educational programs for children, and produces on-line content of singing and interviews for our Digital Stage. The Choir’s repertoire is wide. In 2015, its CD, Soft Blink of Amber Light, was released to broad acclaim, and led in 2016 to both the choir and its Artistic Director, Robert Simpson, being awarded the American Prize for Music. In 2019, its CD, Duruflé: Complete Choral Works, received two Grammy® awards, for best choral performance and for Best Producer (classical).

Now in its 27th season of world-class live performances, recordings, and community outreach, the Houston Chamber Choir seeks an Executive Director to lead the small but talented and energetic off-stage staff which enables the Choir’s on-stage artistic success. The Executive Director is responsible for the oversight and execution of the Choir’s backstage operations, which include budgeting, payroll, accounting, performance logistics, communications, development, sales and marketing, and volunteer relations. The Executive Director has the authority necessary to discharge his or her responsibilities, including direct supervision of the Director of Operations and the Director of Communications and Development. The Executive Director attends the bi-monthly meetings of the Board of Directors and reports on backstage operations.
The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors, as does the Artistic Director, who has full responsibility for the artistic vision and programming of the organization.
The Houston Chamber Choir seeks a proactive leader and influencer, with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once. The Executive Director is an agile, curious learner who is resourceful, flexible, and team-oriented. He or she relishes work in a fast-paced environment, prioritizes tasks effectively, meets deadlines, and conveys excitement about the organization’s mission and vision and its value to the community. He or she is a self-starting, can-do individual who has excellent writing skills, who will listen, who can make decisions, and who can retain the big picture despite sharp focus on details. He or she has a good sense of humor.
The successful and well-qualified applicant must have:
• A bachelor’s degree or higher
• The level of financial literacy necessary to interpret financial statements and act upon them
• General computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, and the ability and willingness to learn new software
• Familiarity with social media and social media platforms
• General or senior-staff management experience in an organization of high caliber and standing is required.
• Fundraising experience is required.
• Experience in an arts organization of similar caliber to the Houston Chamber Choir is highly desired.
