Portland Gay Men’s Chorus
The Portland Gay Men’s Chorus (PGMC) is looking for an energetic, talented, and dynamic Artistic Director to continue our 42-year legacy as a preeminent choral arts organization. Our Artistic Director will create and implement an artistic vision for PGMC that is both aspirational and transformative. This artistic vision will align with the mission, vision, and guiding principles of PGMC within the scope of its local, regional, national, and international programming. The successful candidate is passionate about artistic excellence, collaborative, adaptive to change, and will energize chorus and audience members through their leadership and articulation of the program vision. The Artistic Director will be a leader who oversees the artistic activities of PGMC’s various performing groups (a cappella ensemble “Cascade” and dance troupe “Locomotions”) as well as working in tandem with the organization on numerous educational programs, outreach, and social justice efforts.

ARTISTIC VISION and PERFORMANCES
•Design, coordinate, and direct innovative and compelling artistic programming that appeals to a wide range of audience members, singers, and donors to retain and expand the PGMC audience.
•Develop overarching themes for each concert season that aligns with the mission, vision and guiding principles.
•Serve as the principal conductor of PGMC rehearsals and performances.
•Select repertoire for each concert, ensure music is ordered, coordinate completion of arrangements, orchestrations, practice tracks, and ensure compliance with all copyright laws.
•Select musicians adhering to American Federation of Musician (AFM) union rules.
•Select and supervise leads for vocal and dance ensembles.
•Oversee the audition, selection, and coaching of soloists and small group ensembles (vocal and dance).
•Engage with the Executive Director, Board Executive Committee, Board, Production Staff, relevant PGMC Committees, Chorus, and Staff in planning and communicating the artistic vision for concerts and events.
•Explore and initiate the commissioning of new works, foster relationships with composers and commission donors.
•Improve musicianship, technical proficiency, and performance capability of PGMC and its individual members by ensuring:
•Insure that singers and musicians in PGMC are energized and new and relevant musical skills are built and reinforced on a continual basis.
•New singers are auditioned at the beginning of each term.
•Criteria for the expected abilities of new singers and the method for demonstrating these skills in audition are established and maintained.
•Identify, plan, and coordinate touring and recording opportunities for PGMC.
DONOR CULTIVATION and PUBLIC OUTREACH
•In conjunction with the Executive Director, serve as a public voice for PGMC as local, national, and international ambassadors.
•Assist in the development of strategic fundraising messages for the organization.
•Participate in fundraising and marketing activities, press events, and community relations opportunities as appropriate.
•Assist in the cultivation of major individual, corporate, and foundation gifts as appropriate.
•Participate, as needed, in public visibility and donor cultivation activities.
•Serve as a representative to GALA and other appropriate professional and/or community groups; attend meetings, workshops, and conferences.
COMMUNICATION AND INVOLVEMENT
•Attend Board meetings, retreats, and provide a monthly report to the Board.
•Attend Staff and Chorus committee meetings on a regular basis.
•Ensure consistent communication with Chorus and Board leadership and committee chairs, and the Executive Director on related activities.
•Work with Chorus Leadership in devising appropriate attendance requirements and behavior policies and addressing other membership issues.
•Anticipate and prepare for opportunities to positively impact the community on existing and emerging social justice challenges.
•Continue to engage in ongoing development of professional and interpersonal skills.
•Retain and grow PGMC audiences through the creativity of PGMC productions.
•Provide strong fiscal leadership in the development and adherence to production and artistic budgets.
QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE
•Bachelor’s Degree in Music (advanced degree preferred) or equivalent competency.
•Five years of experience with choral conducting and programming.
•Experience conducting or working with a community-based chorus and with singers of various musical skills and experience.
•Experience with stage production.
•Knowledge of vocal technique and pedagogy.
•Knowledge of and sensitivity to the LGBTQ community, choral movement, and musical/artistic community.
•Commitment to working with and in diverse communities
•Ability to provide strong leadership skills as well as balance work requirements within a team setting.
•Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
•Experience with music arrangement or composition (preferred).
•Experience with non-profit budgets, financial and concert revenue planning.
COMPENSATION and BENEFITS
•Full-time: Monday evening rehearsals with additional evenings and weekends as needed; flexibility in time commitment is required.
•Salary DOE; position includes dental and health insurance benefits.
•Reports to the Board of Directors through the Chair.

•June 18, 2022 – Introduction of new Artistic Director at PGMC’s Pride Concert
•July 01, 2022 – Official state date of new Artistic Director
