Music Director of the Victoria Choral Society
The Victoria Choral Society, located in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, is seeking an enthusiastic, skilled choral conductor with artistic vision and a broad knowledge of choral repertoire to lead the choir beginning in January 2022.
Now entering its 88th season, the Victoria Choral Society is a vibrant, auditioned 120-member SATB symphonic chorus which presents at least three major concerts yearly, both self-produced and in collaboration with the Victoria Symphony and other arts organizations. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Music Director is responsible for the following: selecting repertoire and creating a three-year repertoire plan; auditioning potential and continuing members yearly; selecting soloists and arranging instrumentalists for VCS self-produced performances; leading weekly 2.5-hour rehearsals on Tuesday evenings; conducting the choir and orchestra at concerts; and holding sectionals and extra rehearsals as necessary. The Music Director works closely with the Board of Directors and the Program Advisory Committee.
We are seeking applicants who have completed graduate studies in music with an emphasis on conducting, and/or possess significant conducting experience in the field of choral music. They should have the ability to inspire a shared artistic vision and communicate musical ideas effectively, along with excellent knowledge of vocal techniques, proficiency working with repertoire in different languages (e.g. Latin, German, Italian), and experience conducting orchestral groups. To be considered, applicants need to be legally permitted to work in Canada at the time of applying
