Artistic Director, Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus

Saengerfest is a men’s chorus with a 120-year history. Founded in 1901 by alumni of the
Harvard Medical School, for nearly 100 years it was a quarterly dinner where men sat by voice
part and sang for each other’s pleasure. In 1991 roughly half of the members accepted the
challenge presented by an invitation to join the Festival of Welsh Male Voice Choirs, comprised
of over 1000 voices, at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The success of this venture encouraged
the formation of a permanent chorus of about 60 men rehearsing weekly under a professional
conductor and an accompanist. Now 30 years later the Chorus is searching for an
entrepreneurial Artistic Director to rebrand the chorus for its second century.

Excellent musical skills and contacts within the greater Boston choral community are a given, as
is familiarity with four-part repertoire for men’s voices. Saengerfest has pursued a variety of
virtual events during the pandemic, including weekly Monday evening rehearsals and several
workshops and performances. As we emerge from our COVID-induced shell, we desire also to
provide a musical experience attractive to the next generation of both singers and audiences.

We have set ourselves apart from other choruses by maintaining our heritage of Welsh music
and by memorizing most of our performance music, so each member is focused on the
conductor. Each year we commission a piece of new music or a new arrangement of traditional
favorites, such as spirituals or a medley of songs from a favorite composer such as Gershwin.
We are considering the addition of a choreographer to help us provide a more dynamic
appearance in performance.

Each candidate should provide a Curriculum Vitae to Saengerfest, including references from
past leadership positions. Equally importantly, candidates should outline steps he or she would
undertake to make Saengerfest appeal to the next generation of singers. This might include
repertory and performance style. At the same time, we should retain the fundamental focus of
a male voice chorus.

As the world returns to a more nearly normal operation, it is anticipated that the final
candidates will be invited to lead Saengerfest in a rehearsal which will include a piece we are
familiar with and a selection of the candidate’s own choosing which is brand new to
Saengerfest. The engagement will begin by mid-summer to prepare Saengerfest to sing with the
Highland Glee Club and Apollo Club in October, and to for its holiday concert in December.

General requirements include preparing Monday night rehearsals for three to four concerts
each year, typically from September through June, although Saengerfest has done occasional
summer concerts as well. Saengerfest also plans international travel in alternate years and joint
performances with other choirs.

Please reply by June 15, 2021 to be considered in this search.

Compensation and Benefits:

$15,000 contract position.

The position will be that of an independent contractor to Saengerfest. The position will provide
for an annual contract amount to be paid in equal monthly installments, but will not provide for
a salary, wages or other benefits (e.g., vacation, holiday pay, medical coverage or sick leave).

Most costs of international travel and other reasonable, necessary and authorized expenses will
be paid by Saengerfest. The Artistic Director will be responsible for payment of all federal, state
and local taxes, Social Security contributions, Medicare contributions, unemployment
contributions, workmen’s compensation insurance and employer’s liability coverage.
