After fourteen years of building Encore Creativity for Older Adults into the nation’s largest choral organization for adults over the age of 55, Encore’s Founder and Artistic Director is preparing to retire. This is a unique opportunity for an extraordinary person. The Artistic Director plans and delivers 22 choral programs in DC, MD, NYC and VA, with over 1,200 singers and ten conductors; produces over 35 concerts per year, including an annual concert at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall, presenting 600 singers before an audience of 2,000; plans and executes three annual “summer camps;” and plans and executes an annual international concert tour, working with professional arts travel organizations such as Classical Movements. The program includes Encore Chorale, singing traditional choral music; Encore ROCKS, performing rock & roll music of the 50s through the 90s; and Sentimental Journey Singers, for individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s or other memory impairment. The Artistic Director must be highly organized, an excellent manager and communicator, and have a passion for Encore’s mission. Encore is headquartered in Annapolis, MD.
Well managed and continuous growth is a priority in Encore’s three-year Business and Strategic Plan. Under the general supervision of the Board of Directors, an inspired, committed, and visionary Artistic Director (AD) will define the artistic direction, growth, and future programs of Encore, working closely and in a collaborative and mutually supportive relationship with the Director of Business Operations and Development, who is subordinate to the Artistic Director. Flexibility and mutual understanding between the AD and the Business Director are critical. They must work in concert, supporting each other to achieve Encore’s objectives of growth, artistic excellence, and financial health.
With an annual operating budget of approximately $1.5 million, Encore is governed by an engaged and supportive 11-member Board of Directors (Board). Additionally, there are currently three staff members providing administrative support, as well as ten conductor/instructors who lead the various choral programs.
The AD has overarching responsibility for the nonprofit enterprise. The AD plans, organizes, leads, directs, coordinates, and controls Encore’s overall operations, adhering to the highest professional standards consistent with the objectives and policies established by the Encore’s Board) The AD engages conductors to deliver the rehearsals and the performances via the philosophy, policy and Strategic Plan established by the Board. The AD reports directly to the President of the Board and supervises the Business Director, who is in close communication with the Treasurer of the Board. There are currently three staff members providing administrative support and ten conductors.
As the artistic leader, the AD develops and implements Encore’s artistic vision and is responsible for organizing and coordinating choral program operations and procedures in collaboration with the Business Manager, who has primary responsibility for finances and office operations. The AD leads Encore to expand the audience Encore serves while maintaining artistic quality, financial health and integrity. The AD has the authority to carry out Encore’s regular business and to execute specific directives and initiatives of the Board.
The AD must have a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree in Music preferred, plus a minimum of five to seven years of increasing responsibility in a senior leadership role at a a performing arts organization. S/he should have an avid interest in and/or deep-rooted knowledge and experience in choral music. Piano skills are desirable.
The AD must have demonstrated excellent and proven leadership and should also have shown a strong command of the business of running a choral arts organization, including an understanding of financial management, staff development, and communication skills. S/he should have a track record of success in donor stewardship and the successful solicitation of major gifts and grants. Candidates must also know how to work collaboratively and effectively in a mutually supportive relationship with a Business Director, board members, staff, singers, and volunteers.
